The best (or the worst...) cover versions - tears_of_fire - 06-13-2015

Well...... let's talk about covers...... I think that one of the many ways to judge the skills of a band is to see the way they handle the songs of other bands...... the way a band covers a song tells us a lot of its personality...... they can take the song and remake it as a copy-and-paste of the original version without changing anything, or they can turn it upside-down-inside-out transforming it as their style and their taste...... sometimes with a good result, sometimes with a really bad result...... for example......

For me, this is a good cover

CHILDREN OF BODOM - oops i did it again - originally from Britney Spears

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGtXlBbWeB4

a cover version can be made as a tribute to the original artist, but also only for fun...... maybe some true-defender here can have something to say about Britney Spears...... I say that, first, she is surely a good chick Grin and as pop singer has pulled out some good tunes...... anyway...... I like the original version, and I really like the CHILDREN version, very funny with the screams of Alexi on those silly lyrics Laugh1

On the other side, a cover that I don't really like

SUIDAKRA - marooned - originally from RUNNING WILD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvPDS17QgpQ

maybe it's because this is one of my favourite RUNNING WILD songs, but the sensation is that here SUIDAKRA wanted to put in too much of all their styles (screams, pipes, crunching guitars, double pedal bass drums) making out something that, for me, is only confusion...... the original, from the bombastic initial riff to the end, is an injection of adrenaline and melody up the ass, but here, I'm sorry, the SUIDAKRA cover is a f - - king mess...... Shout

She has a nice voice but come oooon this song is not to be sung by a woman!
Though James Hetfield nowadays is pretty much a bitch himself... Grin

Yesssss good old times for Metallica.
Unfortunately i saw them in 2004 when they already had kicked out the best bassplayer in the world...

RE: The best (or the worst...) cover versions - tears_of_fire - 06-13-2015

and now...... let's talk about VAN CANTO...... surely this band has its original personality, with their vocal "DON DIGHI-DON DIGHI-DON DIGHI-DON" Laugh1 and all along their discography the've made a lot of covers, more or less good than the original versions, but always made new by their "a capella" interpretation...... so, from this long list, it's obvious and natural for me to chose this one

VAN CANTO - the final countdown - originally from EUROPE

because, as we've already said, I'm an ancient one, an old metal-head, in the 80s I was a kid and this is a great classic from those years......
