Gary John Barden is an English rock singer best known as the original vocalist of the Michael Schenker Group (MSG). He joined guitarist Michael Schenker at the beginning of the band’s career and sang on classic albums such as The Michael Schenker Group (1980), MSG (1981), One Night at Budokan (1982) and Built to Destroy (1983). His distinctive voice became closely associated with the early MSG sound and songs such as “Armed and Ready,” “Cry for the Nations” and “Attack of the Mad Axeman.”
After his early years with MSG, Barden remained active in the hard rock scene, forming Statetrooper and later working with bands and projects including Praying Mantis and Silver. He also reunited with Michael Schenker several times, notably for In the Midst of Beauty (2008), the acoustic project Gipsy Lady (2009), and later Michael Schenker Fest.
Barden has also developed a solo career under the name Gary John Barden, releasing albums including Past & Present, Agony & The Xtasy, Love and War, Rock ’n’ Roll My Soul and Eleventh Hour. Although he has been involved in many projects throughout his career, he remains best known for his long association with Michael Schenker and his important role in the classic era of MSG.
